At the beginning of the year, the Dean's Office of the Medical Faculty of the University of Bonn launched a call for the development of innovative eLearning concepts at the University Hospital Bonn(DiLL#24). The most promising submissions received funding for two years. One of the seven funded projects is the project “Medical Risk Communication (MEDRIS)”, led by Prof. Dr. Simone Dohle.
In everyday medical practice, doctors have to assess risks correctly, and communicate them to patients in a comprehensible way. Risk communication requires skills that should be learned and applied during medical school. Effective risk communication is also needed for shared decision-making, as it enables informed decisions.
Together with Prof. Dr. Nils Kroemer (Chair of Medical Psychology), Prof. Dr. Matthias Weigl (Institute for Patient Safety) and Dr. Elisabeth Jurack (Communications Officer of the Medical Faculty of the University of Bonn), Prof. Dr. Simone Dohle aims to develop a digital course as an Open Educational Resource (OER) on the topic of medical risk communication.
The course will be implemeted in the curriculum of the Medical Faculty of the University of Bonn. While medical risk communication has been an integral part during the preclinical, clinical and practical phases of the medical studies, the course will be a useful addition in sense of a learning spiral that serves to deepen student's skills across all phases of the studies. It includes various modules teaching not only the basic concepts, but also providing in-depth application knowledge in the field of risk communication. In addition to interactive videos, other eLearning formats will be used.
