The team from the Dean’s office worked with Professor Weber, the Dean himself, on building a bug hotel to provide a protected habitat for the tiny creatures. The team would like to thank everyone who was involved in the project. Of particular note is the support, tips and practical guidance provided by Professor Mayr, who is the University of Bonn’s resident expert on wild bees, to the project team of the Dean's Office for Sustainability. The bug hotel was placed in an open area behind the building in a south-facing position. The hotel has a protective wire screen to keep out potential predators. Specific types of flowers were planted close nearby the bug hotel, affording a short flight distance for the bees.
All adult and child patients at the hospital and all staff of University Hospital Bonn and of the Faculty of Medicine are invited to come observe the insects living in the hotel (located behind building 33), into which the creatures are slowly but surely moving in to colonize. Visitors should keep a minimum distance of 1 meter away from the habitat to avoid disturbing the ‘hotel guests’.
