Bonn ranks strongly in many areas, comparing very favorably in particular on the national level, in competition with other ‘universities of excellence’. The University of Bonn scored well in particular in the metrics of the number and proportion of a university’s publications that belong to the top 1% and top 5% most frequently cited, compared with other publications in the same field and in the same year. Within Germany Bonn ranked third and fifth for these two metrics, and ranked second for both metrics compared against other ‘universities of excellence’.
The University of Bonn’s strong partnerships with leading researchers the world over are documented by our scoring in the ‘International collaboration’ indicator. The University of Bonn ranks third in Germany for this metric and first among Germany’s ‘universities of excellence’, which indicates the percentage of publications authored in collaboration with international partners. Also the current QS World University Ranking furthermore confirms our great success in international collaboration, as the University of Bonn ranked a very strong 79th worldwide and third in Germany for the newly applied indicator ‘International Research Network’.
Bonn also performed particularly well in the metric of “long-distance” international publications co-authored with research institutions located more than 5,000 km away. For this metric Bonn ranks second in Germany and again first among Germany’s ‘universities of excellence’.
The University of Bonn’s strong showing in the indicator of open access publications reflects the substantial investments made to ensure public accessibility and usability of scientific-academic research work conducted here. Bonn ranks sixth in Germany for this metric and fourth versus Germany’s other ‘universities of excellence’.
The annual Leiden Ranking employs a complex methodology involving bibliometric analyses to evaluate universities’ academic performance based on a range of indicators applied to the institution as a whole and with respect to specific fields. For the 2023 rankings, 1,411 universities from 72 different countries were evaluated.
