Research Interests:

  • Retinal cell therapy (ATMP) for age-related macular degeneration

  • Implantable medical devices for age-related macular degeneration

  • Surgical techniques for macular holes

  • Artificial intelligence for macular diseases

Short personal introduction to gain for the faculty and presentation of the involvement in teaching and research:

For more than two decades, my research has been mainly translational, focusing on retinal cell therapy for age-related macular degeneration (AMD). My research work was strengthened after my habilitation by several years as a consultant at the National Eye Institute in the USA as part of the Cell Therapy Project, which was recently approved by the US FDA for a phase 1/2a study in AMD. In addition, during my time as Hong Leong Visiting Professor at the National University of Singapore, I was instrumental in the development of a primate model platform for retinal cell therapeutics.

My clinical surgical spectrum with over 10,000 intraocular procedures includes retinology, lens surgery and glaucoma. In clinical research, my focus is on retinal imaging and artificial intelligence, macular laser therapy and vitreoretinal surgery for macular holes and AMD. I also lead several industrial contract research projects as 'Principal Investigator', including submacular retinal chip implantation, retinal gene therapy and drug port systems. In addition, I am involved in teaching and PhD supervision, providing my PhD students not only with a sound scientific education, but also with the opportunity to present and publish their research internationally.

In my teaching activities as an external lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine, I am involved in the implementation of the one-week student block internship in ophthalmology, the basic course on clinical examination and other activities. In my function as section head for macular diseases at the Sulzbach Eye Clinic (teaching hospital of Saarland University), I am involved in the training of medical students, residents and specialists. In addition, I regularly organize and teach at national and international congresses/ webinars, especially on the topic of macular diseases.

My current research activities focus on translational retinal cell therapy and clinical projects in the field of macular diseases. After my habilitation, I successfully acquired third-party funding, which initially went to the University Hospital Bonn and was continued via the Fraunhofer Institute (IBMT) after I moved to the Sulzbach Eye Clinic. The collaboration with Prof. Busskamp's working group at the University of Bonn, particularly in preclinical subretinal transplantation of photoreceptor cells, has the potential to position the University of Bonn internationally in the field of translational retinal cell therapy.

Main research interests:

  • Initial assessment systems in clinical acute and emergency medicine

  • Handover process at the interface between rescue service and ZNA

  • Brief personal introduction on the benefits for the faculty and presentation of integration into teaching and research.

Short personal introduction to gain for the faculty and statement of involvement in teaching and research:

Prof. Dr. med. Ingo Gräff is an experienced emergency physician who has built up and continuously developed clinical acute and emergency medicine at the UKB since 2009.

Since 2020, the two emergency centers (INZ / NNZ) with the two associated short-stay wards have been transferred to an independent Department of Clinical Acute and Emergency Medicine. At the same time, Prof. Gräff was appointed Director of the department.

The Department of Clinical Acute and Emergency Medicine treats around 45,000 emergency patients every year, of which around 30-35% become inpatients.

I always like to explain Clinical Acute and Emergency Medicine as follows: “The patient on the left, the in-depth specialist expertise of the individual departments on the right, and us in the middle,” says Prof. Gräff. It is also important to Prof. Gräff to mention the 15 years of cooperative and appreciative collaboration with the individual specialist departments.

Prof. Ingo Gräff was one of the first in North Rhine-Westphalia to obtain full authorization for further training (24 months) for the additional qualification “Clinical Acute and Emergency Medicine” from the North Rhine Medical Association. Since then, he has been regularly appointed as an examiner by the Medical Association and the UKB Board of Directors has subsequently established two further training positions for additional training in clinical acute and emergency medicine.

In teaching, the focus is on case-based, symptom-oriented learning in the context of clinical acute and emergency medicine. The elective Clinical Acute and Emergency Medicine, which has been offered by Prof. Gräff for several semesters and is very well received by students, is particularly worth mentioning here. The focus here is on the approach to emergency patients with their more or less pronounced symptoms. These include the priority-oriented approach according to the so-called cABCDE algorithm, emergency diagnostics, the recognition of so-called red flags and the actual emergency therapy. In extreme cases, the application of so-called life-saving interventions such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

Prof. Gräff's research focuses on initial assessment, which is currently once again the focus of particular attention in the context of the reform of emergency care (Healthcare Further Development Act GVWG). One milestone was the first nationwide introduction of computer-assisted initial assessment at Bonn University Hospital and the validation of the German Manchester Triage System, which Prof. Gräff also habilitated on in 2017. Today, the MTS is the standard system in German emergency departments and meets the requirements of the Joint Federal Committee (GBA), to which his research results have made a significant contribution. As part of a big data study, Prof. Gräff is currently examining the collective of the last 10 years with over 350,000 emergency patients in order to further improve the validity of the system and investigate the influence of actual doctor contact time on mortality. Another focus of Prof. Gräff's research is the handover process at the interface between the ambulance service and the emergency room. There are plans to draw up an S2K guideline in cooperation with the German Society for Interdisciplinary Emergency and Acute Medicine (DGINA). Prof. Gräff is the editor of the book “1000 Fragen zur Zusatzweiterbildung Klinische Akut- und Notfallmedizin” and the magazine “notaufnahme up2date”.

“Clinical acute and emergency medicine will face enormous challenges in the coming years as part of the upcoming reform of emergency care (Emergency Act),” says Prof. Gräff. It is precisely here that he sees the need to further professionalize clinical acute and emergency medicine at the University Hospital Bonn.

Short personal introduction to gain for the faculty and statement of involvement in teaching and research:

Since graduating with a degree in Biotechnology, my scientific work has focused on the cellular and molecular mechanisms of blood clotting. A major focus is the development of new diagnostic test systems that can be used to detect a tendency to bleed or thrombosis. By applying combinatorial chemistry, DNA-based aptamers could be developed and characterized, which are now successfully used in diagnostics as the basic building block of a newly developed assay format (oligonucleotide-based enzyme capture assay). I am involved in the routine diagnostics of the Institute of Experimental Hematology and Transfusion Medicine as head of the coagulation laboratory. Since 2017, I have been active as a member of the doctoral committee of the Faculty of Medicine. I have been involved in student teaching since the beginning of my work at the IHT, contributing in particular my expertise on the coagulation and HLA system with the corresponding laboratory analytics.

Short personal introduction

Professor Vilz has been scientifically involved in one of the main areas of our faculty, (perioperative) immunology and immunopathophysiology, for more than 15 years now. This includes basic scientific aspects, especially the development of postoperative ileus in animal models as well as in patients after oncological abdominal surgery. In this field, Professor Vilz cooperates with experts within the faculty (including Professor Dr. Sven Wehner), but also with national (Professor Dr. Katharina Beyer from Berlin, Prof. Dr. Christoph Reißfelder from Mannheim, Professor Dr. Andreas Schnitzbauer from Frankfurt) or international scientists (Prof. Dr. Wouter de Jonge, Amsterdam). This collaboration has already resulted in a large number of publications and intra- and extramural third-party funding (including DFG and German Cancer Aid) with a total volume of over one million euros.

In addition to basic science research, Professor Vilz has acquired a high level of expertise in the field of clinical research. In addition to the publication of a Cochrane Review on bowel preparation before colorectal surgery, Professor Vilz initiated several clinical trials. In this area, he works closely with the study center of the Institute of Clinical Pharmacology. This cooperation has resulted, for example, in the PreReC (Prehabilitation in Rectal Cancer Surgery) study, a multicenter, prospective randomized, two-arm study involving all CIO sites with the lead study center in surgery at Bonn University Hospital. This study strengthens the Bonn site as well as the CIO and will facilitate recertification at the next audit of the German Cancer Society Zum Darmkrebszentrum.

Two years ago, Professor Vilz was entrusted by the German Society for General and Visceral Surgery (DGAV) and the German Society for Coloproctology (DKG) with the responsible task of developing an S3 guideline on the topic of "Perioperative Management of Gastrointestinal Tumors (POMGAT)" to match his clinical-scientific expertise. For this purpose, Professor Vilz was able to acquire third-party funding from the German Cancer Aid and acts as coordinator of the guideline. The work on the guideline with the participation of many national experts has been completed and the consultation version has just been published.

In addition to his work in the clinic and in research, Professor Vilz has dedicated himself with great commitment to teaching for many years. In addition to the more practically oriented courses Blockpraktikum Chirurgie and GKU, he has also regularly held the main lecture for medical students. Furthermore, he has taught within the different cross-sectional areas (QB) for surgery and also intensively supervised the PJ students in colloquia and seminars. Currently, Professor Vilz is working on an interdisciplinary and intercollegiate IPSTA project on "Perioperative Management in Oncologic Colorectal Surgery", in which students learn preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative management including neoadjuvant and adjuvant therapy concepts.

Research focus:

  • Choroidal melanoma: epigenetic alterations and tumor microenvironment.
  • Clinicopathologic correlation: issues related to ocular tumors, keratoconus, and corneal surgery
  • Development of the eye during the fetal period

Brief personal introduction on gains for faculty and outline of involvement in teaching and research:

My clinical focus is on the conservative and surgical treatment of patients with tumors, eyelid malpositions and corneal diseases. In addition, I work clinically and scientifically in the field of ophthalmopathology, which has a long tradition in Germany but is now practiced at only a few university hospitals. With the subspecialization in the field of ocular development and clinical ophthalmopathological evaluation of fetal eyes, I have developed a unique selling point. This enables me not only to work on scientific questions concerning the development of the eye, but can also be helpful in pediatric pathological diagnostics.
After my return from a DFG-funded research fellowship in the USA, I established the research group "ocular tumors" with intra- and extramural third-party funding, which mainly focuses on the tumor microenvironment and epigentic changes in uveal melanoma.
My research activities are evidenced by numerous publications, including the first description of "Conjunctival stromal tumor (COST)" and "bilateral uveal melanoma in the setting of a BAP1 tumor predisposition syndrome".
In addition to the usual lectures, in order to meet the new requirements due to the pandemic situation and at the same time reach a larger audience, I have initiated a weekly ophthalmopathology lecture via Zoom. This is aimed at students and postgraduate trainees interested in ophthalmology.
My motivation arises from the desire to continuously improve clinical knowledge in eye medicine by linking ophthalmopathology and state-of-the-art methodology. In the future, I will continue to dedicate myself to my research projects and feel committed to my graduate students and undergraduates in a positive sense.

Cognitive Neuroscience:

  • Task and material specificity in episodic long-term memory.
  • Functional imaging of the human reward system
  • Neurobiological bases of social preferences

Gain/involvement in the Bonn Medical School:

My entire clinical and scientific activity to date has focused on cognitive functions and their disorders in neurological, psychiatric and systemic diseases. More or less inevitably, I have therefore been involved for many years in the field of those diseases whose core symptom is a disturbance of cognition: dementias and their various causes. For the treatment and research of these diseases, the UKB with its interdisciplinary, neurological-psychiatric led Clinic for Neurodegenerative Diseases and Gerontopsychiatry and the immediate proximity to the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases offers an extraordinary infrastructure. In order to bridge the gap between basic scientific knowledge and clinical application, it is necessary to combine profound clinical experience with sound scientific and methodological skills. I try to fulfill this task and always try to train and inspire young junior staff for this path.

As an adjunct lecturer in geriatric psychiatry, I also try to teach what I consider to be the rather underrepresented topics of dementia and delirium in the medical curriculum, which are highly relevant to all practicing practitioners.

Research focus:

  • Anxiety disorders (panic disorder, social anxiety disorder): Mechanisms of action of psychotherapy, genetics, psychophysiology, and psychoneuroendocrinology.
  • Somatoform disorders: Artificial intelligence in differential diagnosis to rare disorders; multimodal treatment for chronic pain and chronic pruritus.
  • Psycho-oncology: improving quality of life with innovative therapies in nuclear medicine and radiology; multimodal pain management in palliative care.

Research focus:

  • Supportive psychotherapy and drug treatment in psychooncology
  • Psychotherapy of patients with anxiety disorders, with somatoform disorders and with post-traumatic stress disorders

Gain/involvement in the Bonn Medical School:

In recent years, I have been able to initiate and/or carry out various interdisciplinary projects with other clinics or departments at the UKB (e.g. radiology, nuclear medicine, palliative medicine, anesthesiology, dermatology, internal medicine, human genetics, the Center for Rare Diseases). In particular, the opportunity to broaden one's own perspective and to bring a psychosomatic perspective to other projects/specialties was an enriching challenge.

I would like to particularly highlight:
 - the Social Phobia Research project in collaboration with the Institute of Human Genetics Bonn as well as the Center for Human Genetics Marburg, in which we have been able to collect clinical and genetic data from over 1000 sufferers of social anxiety disorder since 2012.
 - the close cooperation with the Center for Rare Diseases, which has resulted in a textbook on rare diseases in addition to a large number of scientific publications.
 - the cooperation with radiology and nuclear medicine on the aspects of pain and quality of life in the context of innovative therapeutic procedures for oncological diseases (e.g. new radionuclide therapies, HIFU).

In teaching at the UKB within the framework of the internship and the lecture Psychosomatic Medicine, the basic course Clinical Examination as well as in the cross-sectional area Pain, my focus is on the disorders chronic pain/somatoform disorders, post-traumatic stress disorders and doctor-patient communication. It is my concern to introduce the students to a psychosomatic understanding of illness. This should include both the knowledge of neurobiological causes and treatments of diseases, as well as the knowledge of the close link between physical and psychological symptoms, so that in the medical approach the suffering person is not lost from view.

Gain/involvement in the Bonn Medical School:

A gain for the medical faculty exists not only due to the above mentioned research focus, my continued teaching in Bonn, the continuous supervision of PhD students from Bonn and Leipzig, but also due to my new function as chief doctor of one of the eight nationwide DGAV-certified reference centers for hernia surgery (approx. 700 - 800 hernia interventions/year) and at the same time a DGAV-certified competence center for coloproctology (at least 100 colorectal surgical interventions/year), whereby very large annual patient numbers are reached and the medical processes are subjected to a high quality standard. In addition, I have a surgical robot in my department. Through this, the process and outcome quality of robotically assisted procedures in hernia and colorectal surgery from the department for which I am responsible can be scientifically evaluated complementary to the process and outcome quality of robotically assisted procedures in colorectal, pancreas and esophageal surgery at the Surgical University Hospital Bonn through the registers and clinical studies on this topic that are kept, which will lead to a larger data pool for valid statistical analyses or clinical studies for the robotic procedures that are not yet widespread.
Based on my basic science work on postoperative intestinal pathophysiology, close and synergistic collaborations continue to occur, including with the Surgical Research Section and the Surgical Study Center.
In addition to the extensive courses offered by the Department of Surgery, in which I continue to participate (block clerkship, seminars, main lecture, cross section), I also offer ultrasound courses for medical students.
Due to my many years of employment at the UKB and the continued close networking as well as corresponding agreements with the current employer, the continuation of the research projects and the teaching of the courses are guaranteed.

Professional background:
Prof. Herberg studied human medicine at the Ruhr University in Bochum and completed her practical year at the Universities of London, Ontario (Canada), Dunedin (New Zealand) and Ohio (USA). After working as an assistant doctor in clinical chemistry at the Ruhr University in Bochum and in pediatrics at the Municipal Children's Hospital in Cologne, she moved to Bonn in 1990. There she received her specialist qualification in pediatrics and adolescent medicine in 1995 and her specialization in pediatric cardiology in 1999. This was followed by additional qualifications in intensive care medicine, cardiology for adults with congenital heart defects (EMAH in German) and interventional radiology. Since 1999, she has been senior physician and deputy to the medical director of pediatric cardiology. Since 2020, Prof. Herberg has headed the Perinatal Cardiology Section.
Prof. Herberg is, among other things, a member of the DEGUM with DEGUM III qualification, currently on the board of the DGPK, a member of the DGK and was, in addition, head of the Fetal Working Group of the AEPC.

Research focus:

  • 3D echocardiography, cardiac functional analysis using innovative measurement methods, circulation simulation
  • Interdisciplinary diagnostics and therapy of fetuses with cardiac diseases in close cooperation with the Dept. of Prenatal diagnostics (e.g. critical aortic stenosis, fetal cardiac catheter interventions, arrhythmias, feto-fetal transfusion syndrome) and their peri- and postnatal therapy
  • Fontan circulation and height simulation

Gain/involvement in the Bonn Medical School:

The gain for the faculty is the strengthening of the field of perinatal cardiology, which is closely related to prenatal diagnostics and cardiovascular research.  Through her longitudinal research of cardiovascular diseases from the fetal period to adulthood (including as principal investigator in Germany for the "FAST" trial, the registries for long-QT patients and fetal heart valve disruption), Prof. Herberg is closely networked internationally and gives international visibility to the interdisciplinary work in the focus area of perinatal cardiology.  She strengthens Bonn as a location for cardiac research and as an interdisciplinary ultrasound center of the DEGUM through her work on 3D echocardiography, cardiac function diagnostics and circulation simulation. Prof. Herberg is actively involved in teaching (clinical teaching, ultrasound seminars and intensive care seminars, senior mentoring, doctoral seminars) and in continuing education for physicians (training curriculum in pediatric cardiology, echo seminars). Prof. Herberg is a member of the ethics committee of the UKB.
