In addition, Dr. Philipp Worst, Administrative Specialist for Academic Management and part-time city tour guide, and Sustainability Officer Christina Böhm worked with the staff of the Dean’s Office at the Faculty of Medicine to develop an app-free alternative tour serving as a sustainability-oriented team event.
Dr. Worst and his tour guide colleague Daniel Friesen took his Faculty of Medicine colleagues from the offices of the Dean and the Dean of Studies on a tour of Poppelsdorf and Südstadt districts of Bonn focused on sustainable nutrition in the local area and ways to lead an active and environmentally aware lifestyle. The approximately two-hour city tour addresses the usage of existing resources and dependence on global trade through anecdotes and historical accounts relevant to the two districts.
The tour concept is to motivate people to adopt a more conscious and sustainable lifestyle, for what we eat impacts not just our own health but our environment and the society we live in as well. Farming—including harvested crop processing, transport and storage—burdens our ecological systems; meal preparation and food waste disposal also create ecological burden. Achieving sustainable urban development is one of the great challenges of our time.
