Dr. med. Carolin Miklitz
Ms. Miklitz began her psychiatric training in 2019 at the Clinic for Neurodegenerative Diseases and Gerontopsychiatry at Bonn University Hospital under the direction of Prof. Schneider and has also been working as a researcher at the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE Bonn) since then.
During her studies in human medicine, she completed her doctorate in Prof. Remy's working group at the DZNE Bonn on the topic of "Dysfunction of signaling pathway interactions in the hippocampal CA1 region in the mouse model of Alzheimer's disease". Her scientific focus today continues to be in the field of dementia, with a particular interest in Alzheimer's disease and frontotemporal dementia. As a scientist and physician, her goal is to expand the understanding of the pathogenesis of these diseases and to identify potential new approaches for investigation and treatment.
During the Neuro-aCSis fellowship, her focus is on researching the influence of SARS-CoV-2 infection on the onset and progression of dementia in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Based on data from the longitudinal, multicenter DZNE DELCODE study, Ms. Miklitz is investigating the effects of SARS-CoV-2 infection on the course of cognitive deficits and neuropsychiatric symptoms in patients with subjective cognitive impairment (SCD), mild cognitive impairment (MCI), dementia in AD and healthy individuals. In addition, she uses fluid and imaging biomarkers to analyze changes in brain structure and cerebral network activity after SARS-CoV-2 infection and attempts to identify underlying clinical and epidemiological risk factors.
The aim of this research project is to expand the understanding of the role of viral infections in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease and thus contribute to the development of new preventive and therapeutic approaches.
